COOKIES AND IP ADDRESSES

When you visit one of HPUK's websites, HPUK may send you a cookie.

Cookies are text files containing small amounts of information which are downloaded to your personal computer, mobile or other device when you visit a website. Cookies are then sent back to the originating website on each subsequent visit, or to another website that recognises that cookie. Cookies are useful because they allow a website to recognise a user's device.

Persistent cookies - these cookies remain on a user's device for the period of time specified in the cookie. They are activated each time that the user visits the website that created that particular cookie.

Session cookies - these cookies allow website operators to link the actions of a user during a browser session. A browser session starts when a user opens the browser window and finishes when they close the browser window. Session cookies are created temporarily. Once you close the browser, all session cookies are deleted.

Cookies do lots of different jobs, like letting you navigate between pages efficiently, remembering your preferences, and generally improve the user experience.

You can find more information about cookies at www.allaboutcookies.org.

ESSENTIAL COOKIES

These cookies are essential for the running of HPUK's websites. Without the use of these cookies, parts of HPUK's websites would not function. HPUK uses essential cookies in the following two places:

  • Vehicle Booking System - to identify that you have logged in with a valid user name and password
  • Shipping Portal - to identify that you have logged in with a valid user name and password

GOOGLE ANALYTICS

This website uses Google Analytics to help analyse how users use the site. The tool uses "cookies," which are text files placed on your computer, to collect standard Internet log information and visitor behaviour information in an anonymous form. The information generated by the cookie about your use of the website (including your IP address) is transmitted to Google. This information is then used to evaluate visitors' use of the website and to compile statistical reports on website activity for the Sleep Space.

We will never (and will not allow any third party to) use the statistical analytics tool to track or to collect any Personally Identifiable Information of visitors to our site. Google will not associate your IP address with any other data held by Google. Neither Google nor we will link, or seek to link, an IP address with the identity of a computer user. We will not associate any data gathered from this site with any Personally Identifiable Information from any source, unless you explicitly submit that information via a fill-in form on our website.

FUNCTIONAL COOKIES

Functional cookies are used to remember your preferences on HPUK's websites. HPUK uses functional cookies in the following two places:

  • Container Enquiry - to remember the list of containers that was previously inserted. This is to save you from re-entering container details on each search
  • Shipping Portal - once you have visited the Sailing Portal HPUK uses a cookie to indicate an additional menu item. This is to assist you in navigating HPUK's websites

IP ADDRESS

An IP address is a unique number that every computer connected to the internet is assigned. It can be used to identify an Internet Service Provider and country location, but it cannot provide personal information. HPUK records your IP address in the following two places:

  • HPUK's webservers keep a log of IP addresses visiting HPUK's websites. This is removed on a weekly basis and is used to monitor usage of HPUK's websites and is not intended as a means of identification.
  • Users logging on to the Vehicle Booking System will have the IP address used logged for auditing purposes. This is in response to the request of users if their login details have become compromised.

HOW TO CONTROL THE USE OF COOKIES

You are not obliged to accept cookies and may modify your browser so that it will not accept cookies. The browser you use to surf the web not only allows you to see the cookies that you have got but also allows you to control their use.

You can control them by allowing them, deleting them individually or deleting all of them. You can also set your browser to not accept cookies altogether. If this option is selected, you should be aware that many websites will not function properly or at all. It may be possible to set your browser to not accept cookies and ask for your consent before each cookie is set on your device. This gives you control over what is set on your device, however it has the drawback of slowing down your browsing experience.

There are different levels of control too. You are able to prevent just third party cookies being deployed, effectively opting out of behavioural advertising, and some even allow you to block specific companies you do not wish to deploy a cookie, instead of selecting all companies.
